Weight Loss Q&A

What complications can weight loss prevent?

Complications that can come along with obesity include:

  • Pregnancy complications or infertility
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Cancer
  • Increased risk of breast cancer (due to less accurate mammograms)
  • More severe COVID-19 complications
  • Eating disorders
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Asthma
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Degenerative joint disease and osteoarthritis

If your child is struggling with obesity, it’s vital to seek care sooner than later. Obesity can negatively impact their social, mental, and physical development and cause health problems into adulthood.

What happens at a weight loss appointment?

At your or your child’s first consultation, you can expect your provider to:

  • Discuss genetic history
  • Discuss any current symptoms or health concerns
  • Note current medications
  • Discuss current lifestyle
  • Check height and measure neck and waist circumference
  • Check weight
  • Determine body fat and muscle mass
  • Calculate basal metabolic weight (BMR) and body mass index (BMI)
  • Recommend blood tests

It’s important to note that the healthiest weight range for children depends on their height, gender, and age.

After your exam, your provider works with you to develop a plan to meet your or your child’s weight and wellness goals.

What are weight loss treatment options?

CB's NP Health Services offers a wide range of weight loss treatments for children and adults.

Lifestyle

For adults, your provider may encourage individualized diets, supplements, physical exercise, stress reduction methods, sleep enhancement tools, and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT).

For kids, small changes are helpful, like encouraging physical activity, cutting back on processed foods or drinks, and developing healthy eating and sleeping habits. For teens, your provider educates and empowers them to make healthy lifestyle changes or decisions.

Pharmacological

If you’re an adult with a BMI greater than 30 or living with comorbidities, your provider may recommend anti-obesity medications in addition to diet and exercise improvements. Qsymia® is a medication that aids in weight loss, as are other injectable drugs like Ozempic® and Victoza®

Surgical

If you’re an adult with a BMI greater than 40, your provider may recommend a reversible, adjustable gastric band surgery — where a doctor places a Lap-Band around your stomach, limiting your stomach capacity and appetite.

Gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomies are permanent surgeries that support long-lasting weight loss and reduce complications of obesity.
