Physicals are also often required when enrolling in school sports or getting a school or commercial bus driver job with the Department Of Transportation (DOT). Candace Bentley, MSN, APNP, FNP-BC, provides thorough physicals for patients aged two and older at CB's NP Health Services in Brown Deer, Wisconsin. Physicals Q&A

What is a physical?

During a physical or wellness exam, your provider assesses your health as a whole. They identify any acute or chronic current physical conditions, mental health concerns, and ways to ensure healthy lifestyle habits.

CB’s NP Health Services encourages children and adults to undergo a yearly physical exam.

You can also schedule a physical if your child’s school requires one before enrolling them in sports. The Department Of Transportation (DOT) often requires a physical exam if you’re starting a job as a commercial school or bus driver job.

The practice doesn’t offer telemedicine for physicals, as it's necessary to undergo the exam in person.

What happens during a physical?

During a physical, you expect your provider to:

  • Discuss your or your child’s medical history
  • Ask about your family’s medical history
  • Discuss any symptoms present
  • Take your or your child’s vitals (respiratory and heart rate, blood pressure)
  • Check weight
  • Conduct a head, chest, and abdomen exam
  • Examine ears, eyes, throat, and nose
  • Examine skin
  • Perform a depression and anxiety assessment
  • Provide vaccinations or immunizations
  • Evaluate flexibility, joints, and strength (for school sports)

During a child or adolescent physical, your provider may take their weight, body mass index (BMI), and height to plot it on a growth chart. This allows you to see how their growth compares to other children.

Does a physical include screenings or tests?

During a physical, your provider may recommend taking a metabolic panel or a complete blood count. This allows your provider to detect any more serious underlying health conditions. Your provider may screen children for anemia, high cholesterol, or tuberculosis.

You should communicate with your provider if you or your child is at higher risk for cancer, thyroid issues, or heart conditions — they may conduct additional tests.

If you are female, your provider may perform additional well-woman preventive screenings like mammograms, pap smears, pelvic exams, or osteoporosis screenings. Men can expect to undergo a cholesterol test, testicular and hernia exam, and a prostate cancer screening.

Your provider may counsel children on personal hygiene, safety, and substance abuse or allow them to speak privately about their health concerns.

Whether you’re looking to schedule a physical as a preventive measure, for work, or to get your kids ready for school sports, reach out online or call CB’s NP Health Services today.
